Generally, Himalayan salt are used in the same way as ordinary table salt. They are used as bath-salts, as well as for culinary purposes. More recently, large crystal rocks are also used as lamps. One can also make 'solay' which is a Crystal salt/water solution. Due to the complete mineral content of Himalayan Crystal Salt a small amount of 'solay' can be added to fresh water to provide an isotonic drink which may replace lost salt and minerals after excercise. Himalayan Bath Salts are commonly used at spas and by athletes. It is very common in organic skin care products. A natural salt lamp is produced with Himalayan salt. These rock salt lamp products are used by inserting a bulb in the salt lamp in order to excite the ions of the rocks with heat and light.

Himalayan salt is also used the same way as regular salt, as food seasoning and in some drinks. Himalayan salt is also used as Kosher salt due to having a much larger grain size. It has a subtle difference in taste from regular table salt that some say makes it taste better.

Salt in the form of brine is used in tooth brushing for gum bleeding. Brine is also used to remedy certain skin conditions such as foot fungus.

Himalayan salt is used as an ingredient in making bath additives such as bath salts, bath bomba, and other related products like scrubs.

Himalayan salt crystal rocks are used in making lamps. These large crystal rocks are carved into their desired shape and size. The final shape of the crystal rock are then mounted on a wooden base for stability and an electrical bulb is fixed within the hollow of the crystal which illuminates the whole rock when lit. Himalayan salt plates are used in presentation and culinary settings. Salt plates can be carefully heated and used to sear food such as vegetables, fish, shrimp or thin slices of steak. They are clear as glass and highly priced. It is important to note that 'Halite' or 'Crystal' salt is not the same as the salt we can buy for the use in the kitchen. This salt is pure sodiumchloride and is a side product, it is a rock salt from a mine which is then freed of all additive minerals in order to be used for industrial production; what is left over, is sold as kitchen salt, but unlike 'Himalayan crystal salt' it is not biochemically balanced for our cells to absorb. Himalayan Crystal salt appears in veins within the rock and therefore must be mined by hand. Use of dynamite in some commercial mines contaminates both the salt and the environment. It is commonly mined in the Khewra Salt Mines, the second largest salt mine in the world, located in Khewra, Jhelum District, Punjab, Pakistan, about 160 kilometres from Islamabad and 260 kilometres from Lahore, and in the foothills of the Salt Range.
The salt sometimes comes out in a reddish or pink color, with some crystals having an off-white to transparent color. It is commonly used for cooking similar to regular table salt, brine, and bath products
Pink Salt is a rock salt mined in several parts of the world, including Hawaii, Utah, Peru, Pakistan (Organic Skin Care) and Poland. The color results from iron oxide.
Mineral composition
In 2003 the Bavarian consumer protection agency Bayerisches Landesamt für Gesundheit und Lebensmittelsicherheit analyzed 15 specimens of Himalayan salt sold in Germany and could detect a total of 10 different minerals: sodium and chloride (98%) and other minerals. This agency states that these salts are coming from Pakistan and may, as every salt used in the kitchen, be harmful in the case of arterial Hypertension. German public television broadcaster ZDF presented the analyzed chemical composition of Himalaya-salt made by mineralogist Michael Siemann of the technical university of Clausthal (TU Clausthal Germany) who states that the specimen contained 95-96% sodiumchloride and 10 different minerals. 3% was a polyhalite contamination (known as gypsum).
The book titled “Water and Salt, The Essence of Life”, by Barbara Hendel and Peter Ferreira (in reality German businessman and Himalayan salt seller Peter Druf ), show a different analysis of the chemical composition of Himalayan salts in their own book, referencing a non-existent Himalaya Institute of Biophysical Research, Las Vegas.
The discrepancies are most likely due the first test being conducted on Himalayan rock salt and the second being conducted on Himalayan Crystal Salt.
Generally, every kind of salt has to be used sparingly. What we usually call salt is pure sodium chloride without magnesia, kalium etc., whereas salt from mines is a remnant of at least 200 Million year old ocean sediments which contain the full range of minerals that we need, it is identical to the substances that we all come from. This is why pure sodium chloride causes problems for one's health which are not proven for the use of. Pure sodium chloride is industrial dump. Himalayan salt
